How Webcam Sites Work
Here is how webcam sites work in brief: they stream adult performers live from their own rooms. Most let you watch public rooms for free and make their money when viewers buy tokens or credits to tip, unlock private shows or join fan clubs; a smaller group charges by the minute instead. The platform keeps a share of every purchase and pays the rest to the performer.

In short
- Three business models: free-to-watch tip sites, pay-per-minute private show sites, and hybrids that mix both.
- You pay with a site currency (tokens or credits) bought in packages, or directly per minute on sites like Streamate.
- Performers set their own prices for private shows and tip menus; the platform takes a cut.
- Payments usually run through third-party processors, so the site name often does not appear on your statement.
- Everyone on camera must be a verified adult, and viewers in a growing number of countries and US states now face age checks too.
A typical visit, step by step
Here is how webcam sites work from a first-time viewer's side, using the steps the larger platforms document in their help centers.
- You land on a directory of live rooms. The homepage shows thumbnails of performers who are online right now, usually filtered by category, country or price.
- You open a public room. On most freemium sites the stream plays without an account. Chaturbate's help center says "anyone can watch cams and broadcast themselves free of charge. No credit card needed."
- You create a free account to chat. Guests can usually watch but not type, and some sites limit how long a guest can stay.
- You buy tokens or credits if you want to interact. Packages are paid by card, crypto or local methods, and larger packages cost less per unit.
- You spend them. Tips in public chat, a private show billed per minute, a ticket for a group show, a fan club, or recorded videos.
How webcam sites work: the three business models
Free-to-watch tip sites
Chaturbate, Stripchat, BongaCams, CamSoda, MyFreeCams and CAM4 are built around free public rooms. Performers earn from tips sent during the public show, often against a tip menu or a goal counter, and from private shows that viewers start from the room. Because the public stream is free, these sites have the largest audiences and the most performers online at any time.
Pay-per-minute private show sites
LiveJasmin, Streamate, ImLive and XloveCam put the paid private show at the center. Free chat exists, but on LiveJasmin the Terms say nudity is only for private mode. Streamate bills paid chat per minute at the performer's posted rate in your local currency, with no token packages at all. SkyPrivate goes further: there are no public rooms, only paid one-on-one calls priced in US dollars per minute.
Hybrids and network sites
Flirt4Free and Cams.com mix free chat with many paid formats. Jerkmate is a front end that matches viewers with performers from the Streamate pool and bills through the same company. Our comparison of token sites and credit sites goes deeper into how the pricing models differ.
Tokens, credits and per-minute billing
Most platforms sell a site currency so that a tip of "50 tokens" means the same thing to every viewer. You buy it in packages, and the price per unit falls as packages grow. Stripchat's own example table runs from 200 tokens for $20.99 to 12,570 tokens for $999.99, about $0.105 down to $0.080 per token (published in its payout help article, checked October 2026). BongaCams shows its full list logged out, starting at 27 tokens for 2.99 € as seen from an EU connection.
Two things surprise new users. First, the price is not the same everywhere: several platforms say prices depend on your country, VAT and payment method. Second, the value of a token to the performer is lower than what you paid for it. Chaturbate, for example, converts tokens to cash for broadcasters at $0.05 each. Our webcam tokens explained page covers the math, and the cam site pricing overview compares what each platform charges.
The show types you will run into
- Public show: free to watch, paid for by tips. Performers often run tip goals and interactive toys that react to tips.
- Private show: one viewer pays a per-minute rate set by the performer. Stripchat documents 8 to 150 tokens per minute; BongaCams uses a default of 60 tokens per minute that models can change. See how private shows work.
- Group and ticket shows: several viewers share the cost of one show, either per minute or with a one-off ticket.
- Spy or voyeur mode: you watch someone else's private show without interacting, at a lower rate. MyFreeCams charges 20 tokens per minute for this.
- Cam to cam: the performer can see you. Some platforms include it, others charge for it.
- Fan clubs and memberships: monthly subscriptions to one performer, or site-wide perks such as ad-free browsing and private messaging.

Who gets paid, and how much
Performers are independent contractors or work through studios. They sign up with an ID check, set their prices and keep a share of what viewers spend. Some platforms publish a fixed value per token: $0.05 at Chaturbate, Stripchat, CamSoda and MyFreeCams, and $0.10 at CAM4. Others use a percentage: LiveJasmin pays 30% to 80% depending on the model's earnings level in the period, and SkyPrivate pays 70% by default.
Not every number lines up neatly. BongaCams says models get "about 50%" while also stating a fixed 0.025 € per token, which works out lower than 50% against its own package prices. We show both rather than guess. Payout shares, minimums and schedules for each site are compared on our platform fees page.
How you are billed
Adult sites rarely bill under their own name. Card payments usually go through a specialist processor such as CCBill, Epoch or Segpay, and that processor's name appears on your statement. CCBill's consumer support page puts it plainly: a charge referring to ccbill.com means "you have purchased a subscription from a web site that uses CCBill for its billing services." Many platforms publish the exact descriptor text, and we collect them on how webcam billing appears on your statement.
Token purchases are normally one-off charges. The products that renew automatically are memberships (such as Chaturbate Supporter or CamSoda Premium), fan clubs and optional auto-refill features. If you want to stay in control of spending, read how to stop recurring billing before you subscribe to anything.
Age checks for performers and viewers
The platforms we cover require performers to prove they are at least 18 with a government photo ID before they can broadcast adult shows, usually together with a selfie holding that ID; XloveCam sets 21 where local law requires it. On Chaturbate and CAM4, every person who appears on camera must be verified. Card networks reinforce this: since October 2021 Mastercard has required adult merchants to verify the age and identity of everyone depicted.
Viewers are increasingly checked as well. In the UK, every site that allows pornography has had to use "highly effective" age checks since 25 July 2025. In the US, the Supreme Court upheld Texas's age-verification law in June 2025, and 27 states had such laws in effect or passed by mid 2026. Depending on where you are, a cam site may ask for a card check, a face-based age estimate or an ID before it shows anything.
FAQ
Are cam sites free to watch?
Many are. Chaturbate, Stripchat, BongaCams, CamSoda, MyFreeCams, CAM4 and others let you watch public rooms for free, often without an account. Pay-per-minute sites offer free chat too, but explicit content is mostly behind paid private shows. SkyPrivate has no free streams at all.
What is a token on a cam site?
A prepaid site currency you buy in packages and spend on tips, private shows and other extras. The price per token depends on the package size, your country and the payment method, and the performer receives a fixed amount or a percentage per token.
How do cam sites make money?
They keep the difference between what viewers pay for tokens, credits or minutes and what they pay out to performers, and some also sell memberships. Affiliate programs and white-label sites bring in additional traffic.
How do cam models get paid?
Earned tokens or credits are converted to money at the platform's rate and paid out on a schedule (weekly or twice a month on most big sites) once the model passes a minimum, using methods such as Paxum, bank transfer, check or crypto.
Do I need to show ID to watch?
It depends on your location. Several platforms run age checks only where the law requires them, for example in the UK and in US states with age-verification laws. The methods vary: card checks, facial age estimation or an ID scan through a third-party provider.
