Public Chat vs Private Show
Public chat vs private show is the basic choice on every cam site. Public chat is free to watch and shared with everyone in the room, paid for by viewers who choose to tip. A private show is paid per minute, the performer leaves public chat to stream for you, and on most sites the performer sets the rate (8 to 150 tokens per minute on Stripchat, for example).
In short
- Public (free) chat: free to watch, many viewers, the performer follows the room's goals and tip menu. You usually need a free account to type.
- Private show: one viewer pays per minute for the performer's attention; on most sites others can still "spy" unless you choose an exclusive option.
- In between sit group shows, ticket shows and spy mode, which cost less than a private.
- On premium sites such as LiveJasmin, free chat stays non-nude and adult content happens in private.
Public chat vs private show: key differences
| Public chat | Private show | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free to watch; tips optional | Per minute (or per block of time), usually set by the performer |
| Who is watching | Everyone in the room, including guests | You, plus paying spies unless it is an exclusive or no-spy private |
| Who decides what happens | The room: goals, tip menus, the performer's rules | You and the performer, within the site's rules |
| Account | Often not needed to watch; needed to chat | Account and a token or credit balance (or card) needed |
| Content limits | Some premium sites keep free chat non-nude | The site's adult content rules apply |
| Recording | Some sites sell public show recordings | Several sites save the private to your account |
What happens in public (free) chat
On token sites such as Chaturbate, Stripchat and BongaCams, the public show is the main product. It is free to watch, and performers earn from viewers who tip, often against a tip menu or a goal. You can usually watch as a guest; chatting needs a free account, and some performers limit chat further (for example to verified users or token holders on Stripchat, or registered and Premium members on MyFreeCams).
Rules matter here. Chaturbate's terms say tips are final and prohibit tipping for specific acts. On premium sites free chat is more limited: LiveJasmin's terms allow free text chat with dressed performers and reserve nudity for private mode, and Cams.com's model rules allow no full nudity in free chat. What a private show is and how it starts
A private show takes the performer out of public chat and bills you per minute until you or the performer ends it, or your balance runs out. Typical rules from official pages:
- Who starts it: on Chaturbate the viewer requests a private and the broadcaster cannot start it; on MyFreeCams the model accepts or declines.
- Who sets the price: the performer on most sites. MyFreeCams is the exception, with a fixed 60 tokens per minute for every model.
- Minimum length: Chaturbate, Stripchat and CamSoda let performers set a minimum. Stripchat charges the minimum if you leave early; CamSoda refunds unused minimum time only if the model ends early.
- Billing step: BongaCams and LiveJasmin bill per second, MyFreeCams charges 1 token per second, CamSoda collects every 10 seconds.

Free chat vs private chat: who else can watch?
A standard private is not always private. On many sites other members can pay a lower rate to watch it in spy mode. If you want nobody else watching, choose the no-spy version:
| Platform | Standard private | No-spy option |
|---|---|---|
| MyFreeCams | 60 tokens/min, spies allowed | TruePrivate, 80 tokens/min |
| BongaCams | Default 60 tokens/min, spies allowed | Full-private, default 90 tokens/min |
| Chaturbate | Broadcaster's rate, spying can be allowed | Premium private show, own price |
| Stripchat | 8 to 150 tokens/min | Exclusive Private, 8 to 150 tokens/min |
| CamSoda | 6 to 120 tokens/min (typical) | Exclusive Private, 12 to 150 (typical) |
| LiveJasmin | Credits per minute | Exclusive Private (lock icon) |
| XLoveCam | Private Show, others can join | 100% Xclusive Show |
The site-specific term for this on MyFreeCams is explained in our true private glossary entry.
The options in between: group, ticket and spy shows
If a private is more than you want to spend, three formats sit between free chat and a one-on-one show:
- Group shows: several viewers share the cost. MyFreeCams charges 10 tokens per minute each (at least 3 members); BongaCams defaults to 30 tokens per minute per participant; Stripchat says group shows are usually cheaper than a private.
- Ticket shows: one fixed price for the whole show. Stripchat ticket shows cost 8 to 1,000 tokens; Chaturbate sells tickets through a set tip. See what a ticket show is and our group shows guide.
- Spy mode: watch someone else's private without interacting. MyFreeCams charges 20 tokens per minute, BongaCams defaults to 15, Stripchat charges 4 to 60 after a free 15-second peek, and LiveJasmin's Sneak Peek gives 25 seconds for 1.99 credits. More in spy mode explained.

What a private show costs: worked examples
These examples use only fixed or default rates and published package prices, checked October 14, 2026.
- MyFreeCams, 10 minutes: 60 tokens per minute = 600 tokens. At the 900-token package ($74.99, about $0.083 per token) that is about $50. MyFreeCams itself notes that 200 tokens last only 3 minutes 20 seconds in a private.
- BongaCams, 10 minutes at the 60-token default: 600 tokens. At the 800-token package rate (€49.99, about €0.0625 per token) that is about €37.50. These are euro prices seen from an EU IP; other countries can see other prices.
- Group or spy instead: 10 minutes of a MyFreeCams group show is 100 tokens, and 10 minutes of spying is 200 tokens.
The two examples are in different currencies, so do not read one as cheaper than the other. For every platform's rates and package prices, see how much a private cam show costs, and for the unit differences behind the prices, token vs credit sites.
Cam to cam and recordings in private
Private shows often include extras that public chat does not:
- Cam to cam: CamSoda includes it in the private rate if the model enables it; BongaCams premium members can show their webcam for free; Stripchat prices it at 8 to 250 tokens per minute; LiveJasmin says it may cost extra; Chaturbate requires viewer age verification for it. See cam to cam explained.
- Recordings: Chaturbate records privates of 30 seconds or longer to the buyer's collection by default; MyFreeCams archives them free but "not guaranteed"; BongaCams keeps full-private recordings while the model's profile is active; Stripchat and CamSoda save them if the model allows.
Refunds and good habits before you go private
Refund rules for private shows are narrow. Stripchat gives no full token refund if a disputed private lasted over five minutes and wants complaints within 48 hours. BongaCams and LiveJasmin refund tokens or credits mainly for technical faults or a performer refusing content, with complaints within 24 hours. MyFreeCams can refund tokens for an unsatisfactory private, but not for tips, group or spy shows.
As general good practice: check the per-minute rate, any minimum length and whether spies are allowed before you start, keep only the balance you are happy to spend, and remember that tips are usually final.
Which should you choose?
Stay in public chat if you enjoy the room atmosphere, want to spend nothing or only tip occasionally. Choose a private if you want the performer's full attention and are comfortable paying per minute; pick an exclusive option if you do not want spies. If you want something in between, a group or ticket show costs less. Browse sites built for private shows or the full comparisons section.
FAQ
Is public chat free on cam sites?
Watching public chat is free on token sites such as Chaturbate, Stripchat, BongaCams, CamSoda, MyFreeCams and CAM4. Chatting usually needs a free account, and tipping is optional.
Can other people watch my private show?
On many sites, yes: spies can pay to watch a standard private without interacting. Choose an exclusive or no-spy private (for example TruePrivate on MyFreeCams or Full-private on BongaCams) to prevent it.
How much does a private show cost per minute?
It depends on the site and performer. MyFreeCams is fixed at 60 tokens per minute, BongaCams defaults to 60, Stripchat ranges from 8 to 150 and CAM4 from 6 to 120 tokens per minute.
What is the difference between private and exclusive private?
In an exclusive private nobody can spy, and some sites charge more for it. BongaCams' default is 60 tokens per minute for private and 90 for full-private.
Do I need an account for free chat?
Usually not to watch, but yes to type in chat. Some regions also require age verification before you can view.
