How to Start Camming

To start camming you need to be at least 18 (21 in some regions on some sites), pass the platform's ID and selfie verification, sign its model agreement and add tax and payout details. After that, the work is practical: pick a platform whose payout terms suit you, set up a camera, light and stable upload connection, protect your privacy, and plan your first shows.

In short

  • Every cam platform requires performers to be adults and to verify a government photo ID plus a selfie or live video. Everyone who appears on camera must be verified.
  • US law (18 U.S.C. 2257) and card network rules are the reason platforms collect and keep these records.
  • Compare payout share, minimum payout and payout methods before you sign up; the numbers differ a lot between sites.
  • A webcam, a soft light and at least 5 Mbps wired upload cover the basics.
  • Use geo-blocking, a stage name and two-step login from day one, and keep tax records.

This guide follows the steps in the order you will meet them, using official model documentation checked on October 14, 2026. It is part of our guide for cam models.

Step by step: how to start camming

  1. Check you are eligible. You must be 18 or older. BongaCams and XLoveCam say 21 where local law requires it.
  2. Compare platforms. Look at payout share, token value, minimum payout, payout methods and audience tools (see the table below).
  3. Prepare your documents. A valid, unexpired government photo ID and a phone or webcam for the selfie step.
  4. Register and verify. Create a model account, upload the ID and selfie, sign the model agreement.
  5. Add tax and payout details. Tax forms (W-9 or W-8 on US-run sites, DAC7 details for EU residents) and a payout method.
  6. Set up your room. Camera, light, sound and a stable upload connection; run a private test stream.
  7. Lock down privacy. Stage name, geo-blocking, two-step login, a clean background.
  8. Plan your first shows. A schedule, a tip menu and goals, and a profile with clear rules.

Age and ID verification

Verification is the part new performers ask about most, and it is not optional anywhere. The requirements are similar across platforms but the details differ:

  • Chaturbate asks for a valid, unexpired, government-issued plastic ID (driver's licence or passport; no temporary, military or handwritten IDs) plus a selfie of the ID holder. Its terms also mention a live selfie video and live video of the ID.
  • Stripchat asks for a passport, ID card or driver's licence (both sides, in color), a real-time selfie and a photo holding the ID next to your face with a handwritten note of the current date and your username. Its help center says documents are usually reviewed within 24 hours.
  • CamSoda uses a face scan or selfie with ID through a smartphone QR flow, with third-party verification providers such as Jumio and Incode named in its help center.
  • LiveJasmin requires a valid government photo ID or passport plus a selfie holding the ID close to your face.
  • BongaCams asks for a photo of your ID, a face photo and a photo holding the ID at face level.

Two rules apply almost everywhere: every person who appears on camera needs their own verification (Chaturbate and Cam4 say so explicitly), and payouts only start once identity, age and tax checks are complete.

Why platforms need your ID: 2257 and card rules

In the United States, 18 U.S.C. 2257 requires producers of sexually explicit content to check each performer's ID for legal name and date of birth and keep records. The implementing regulation, 28 CFR 75.2, adds that for depictions performed live on the internet the records include a copy of the performance "with running-time sufficient to identify the performer". That clause is why platforms collect ID and identification footage. Card networks add pressure too: since 2021 Mastercard requires documented age, identity and consent checks for everyone depicted.

Your legal name stays in the platform's compliance records. Viewers see your stage name and whatever you choose to put on your profile.

Choosing a platform

The platform decides how you earn. Token sites such as Chaturbate, Stripchat and CamSoda pay a fixed amount per token; LiveJasmin and Streamate sell paid minutes and pay a share. The table summarizes the official model documentation.

Questions worth answering before you register:

  • What does one token or minute pay you? The full breakdown is on webcam platform fees.
  • How and when do you get paid? Minimums, schedules and per-method fees are compared on cam model payout methods.
  • Is the platform usable where you live? For example, Chaturbate says that from June 30, 2025, members in Sweden can no longer buy, send or receive tokens or convert tokens to payouts.

Our ranked overview is on the best webcam sites for models, and each major site has its own page: Chaturbate for models, Stripchat for models, BongaCams for models, LiveJasmin for models and CamSoda for models. Several sites (Flirt4Free, for example) are non-exclusive, so you can test more than one.

Your basic setup

You do not need a studio to start. Platforms list modest minimums:

  • Connection: Chaturbate asks for 5 Mbps upload for standard quality and 10 Mbps or more for HD, with wired Ethernet recommended. MyFreeCams asks for 5 Mbps or more and "strongly" recommends Ethernet; LiveJasmin recommends at least 6 Mbps.
  • Computer: a Windows or Mac computer is the usual base. LiveJasmin's desktop broadcaster needs Windows 10 64-bit or macOS 13.4 or newer.
  • Camera, light and sound: a 1080p-capable webcam, one soft front light and a clear microphone cover most needs. See our webcam equipment guide and lighting tips.
  • Software: a browser broadcaster to start, OBS Studio later. See webcam software and the streaming setup walkthrough.

Several sites also let you broadcast from a phone (Chaturbate and Stripchat in the mobile browser, Cam4, LiveJasmin and BongaCams through apps), a reasonable way to test before buying anything.

Privacy and safety for new models

Privacy is easiest to protect before your first show. Platform tools you can use from day one:

  • Geo-blocking. Chaturbate lets you block countries, US states, Canadian provinces and UK regions (it notes IP blocking is "not 100% accurate"). LiveJasmin can hide you from your home country or state plus up to three more. Stripchat lets you ban countries and regions and hide the country flag taken from your ID. More on how geo-blocking works.
  • Two-step login. Cam4 makes 2FA mandatory for broadcasters; Chaturbate offers 2-Step Verification by SMS, call, authenticator app or YubiKey.
  • Chat moderation. Chaturbate has ChaturSafe filters and moderators; LiveJasmin has a banned-words list and a "No Face" option.
  • Discreet payments. Chaturbate says payout checks and envelopes show Multi Media LLC, not Chaturbate.

General best practice, not platform policy: use a stage name and a separate email address, never show mail, documents, windows or landmarks on camera (see background ideas), keep location services off for anything you post, and do not move conversations to personal accounts.

Your first shows

New performers often get extra visibility for a limited time, so be ready on day one:

  • Chaturbate shows a NEW tag for your first 80 streaming hours within 30 days.
  • Stripchat runs a 30-day / 80-hour new model promotion.
  • LiveJasmin's Newbie program lasts 90 days, with a "New" badge and promotional pricing.
  • Flirt4Free has a Welcome Day show for new models; CamSoda offers a free cam training course.

As general practice, publish a schedule, add a tip menu and a simple goal before going live, and write room rules in your profile. Our audience growth guide covers the rest.

Taxes and reporting

Camming income is taxable, and platforms collect tax details before they pay out. What the documentation shows:

  • US-run sites ask for a W-9 (US) or W-8/W-8BEN (non-US) form; CamSoda and Cams.com state this. Chaturbate says US creators earning $600 or more get a 1099-MISC.
  • EU residents fall under DAC7 (Council Directive (EU) 2021/514), which requires platforms to report sellers of "personal services" to tax authorities, from periods starting January 1, 2023. Reported data includes name, address, date of birth, tax ID, earnings and payout account. The small-seller exclusion applies only to goods, not to personal services.
  • Chaturbate treats private shows as personal services for DAC7 and says it emails a password-protected PDF of what will be reported. BongaModels also says EU-resident models must provide tax details.

How each EU tax authority classifies cam shows is an interpretation, so ask a local tax adviser and keep records from the start.

FAQ

What do I need to start camming?

Proof that you are 18 or older (a valid government photo ID), a selfie for verification, tax and payout details, a device with a camera, some light and a stable internet connection with at least about 5 Mbps upload.

Do cam sites need my real ID?

Yes. Platforms must verify every performer's legal name and date of birth (18 U.S.C. 2257 and card network rules). Viewers do not see these details; they see your stage name.

How long does verification take?

Stripchat says documents are usually reviewed within 24 hours; Streamate says applications are reviewed in 24 to 72 hours. Other platforms do not publish a time.

Can cam models stay anonymous?

Not toward the platform, but largely toward viewers: stage name, geo-blocking and nothing identifying in frame.

Do cam models pay taxes?

Yes. US-run sites collect W-9 or W-8 forms and issue 1099 forms where required, and EU platforms report earnings under DAC7. Check local rules with a tax adviser.
